Local Law 97: A new era of building performance standards

Passed in 2019, New York City’s Local Law 97 is a groundbreaking building performance standard that has taken effect in 2024 and caps emissions for buildings over 25,000 square feet and affects over 40,000 of them.

Non-compliant buildings may face heavy fines. This legislation is part of a broader trend in the U.S. to adopt building performance standards, driven by the fact that buildings contribute up to 30% of national greenhouse gas emissions, and up to 70% in densely populated cities like NYC. This shift highlights the urgent need for simplified, automated ESG reporting, energy conservation measures, and decarbonization solutions.

The impact of digital twin technology on building management

Traditional Building Management Systems (BMS) and ESG reporting tools are limited, often proprietary, and incompatible with different technologies, making data collection and integration challenging. New property technologies, however, offer significant improvements, including AI and digital twin technology.

Facilitating energy efficiency, predictive maintenance, scenario testing, risk management, and automated reporting, digital twins enable real-time data tracking and analysis from various sources, leading to companies reducing their energy consumption and saving millions annually – check out Akila x Ikea’s story. Such systems can also generate real-time emissions reports and comprehensively monitor energy, water, waste, and air quality data.

The future of cognitive buildings with AI and digital twin

Digital twins and AI help buildings become “cognitive,” learning from data to make precise predictions, detect anomalies, recommend corrective actions, and prevent faults. These technologies enhance equipment lifespan, improve operating efficiency, and reduce cost by monitoring and optimizing energy consumption. Cognitive buildings can also simulate various scenarios to optimize decisions and minimize risks.

As the demand for decarbonization in the built environment grows, digital twins and AI will be crucial. By 2025, over 500 cities are expected to use these technologies, marking a significant shift towards a “Digital First Strategy” for achieving ESG goals.
